Do you think that the Ancient Greeks and Romans were rational people? They had quite different ideas about human rights to the ones that you have. If you had a debate with one of them about the practice of human slavery, would you win? If not, is that because of a lack of rationality on their part?

That's not really a complete explanation, because even if you have bad character you still presumably need some kind of motivation to lie about something. Or do you think I would lie about it just for fun?
